Welcome to West Rutland
Like many small towns in Vermont, residents and visitors think West Rutland is truly a special place. West Rutland's origins revolve around the marble industry. This has created a rich cultural heritage, stemming from a time when the streets and quarries were filled with exotic voices of the immigrant laborers.

Our landscape has changed since the marble industrial era. The commercial quarries are closed, but the uniqueness and visual reminders of that successful era have not faded. Where else will you find a school that teaches how to sculpt marble and also visit small private galleries of the local artists? These amongst others create a rich and colorful striving community.

We are tucked away in between the Taconic Mountain Range and the main range of the Green Mountains. We are easy to get to— from old Business Route 4 or exit # 6 off US Route 4. The town offers every day amenities from a national chain grocery store and pharmacy, a locally owned bank, hardware store, and a number of eateries giving locals and visitors no reason to leave town. We offer a recreation area, hiking trails, hunting and fishing, skiing at nearby Pico/Killington and the lakes region is a short ten-minute drive.

PLACES OF INTEREST


Located in southwestern Vermont, the West Rutland School enrolls about 400 students from West Rutland and a few surrounding towns. The school serves all students in grades K-12 and also houses an early essential education (EEE) classroom in the building. WRS is a member of the Rutland Central Supervisory, which serves the administrative needs of Proctor High School, Proctor Elementary School and Rutland Town in addition to West Rutland. The West Rutland Marsh has been officially recognized by the National Audubon society as an Important Bird Area. There are both rare and common species of birds and other various types of wildlife in abundance. A boardwalk, which is ADA accessible, allows for enhanced wildlife viewing opportunities. The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center is a unique establishment that offers various artistic educational programs with an emphasis on marble sculpting. There are accredited programs from one week to two months long taught by twenty regular and several guest instructors. (www.carvingstudio.org)
